Northview School, an IB World School, came into existence as a Middle Years Program school in 2009. The levels 4-5 MYP then went to SIHS after two years, and
we remained just with Levels 1, 2, 3 (the traditional middle school grades). As of 2023 and with the expansion of the MYP program; Oakwood Middle School students complete years 1, 2, and 3 (traditionally 6th, 7th and 8th) and may then choose to move on the South Iredell High School for MYP 4 and 5 (traditionally 9th and 10th) or may continue to Statesville High School which is a candidacy school for MYP 4 and 5 as well.
In 2020, we began making serious preparations for our transition to a renovated building. We were informed that the name of Northview could not go with us. But
our teachers really wanted to “rebrand” our school and not just adopt the former name. So we did some research and found that this building, with the original section built in 1958, was named Oakwood Junior High School. Then in the 90s, it became Statesville Middle School. So we decided to propose the name Oakwood Middle School, an IB World School, to our community, and it was an unanimous vote of approval. Our ISS Board of Education was also thrilled with this name as the name paid respect to the original school name and area in which it’s located. Oakwood Middle School’s vision is to empower students to become creative problem solvers, global citizens, and lifelong learners. As an International Baccalaureate School, we will do this by facilitating collaborative, compassionate, and creative learning experiences; involving students in service as action; offering a balanced, whole minded education; and teaching students different avenues of learning.
